Today, we’ll be discussing Episode 17 of Mr. Queen, the hit K Drama on Netflix starring Shin Hye-sun as Kim So-yong, Kim Jyung-hun as King Cheoljong, Seol In-ah as Jo Hwa-jin, Na In-woo as Kim Byeong-in, and Choi Jin-hyuk as Jang Bong-hwan. We also talk about the different hats worn by the nobles and court officials during the Joseon Dynasty.
We discuss:
The songs featured in the recap: Like a Star by Jang Han-byul and Rebellion by Kim Deuk-su
How we got whiplash from this episode because it started out funny, then turned sweet, then turned sad, then turned dangerous.
Jang Bong-hwan’s identity crisis over being pregnant. While the king and the court celebrate, the queen is really upset.
How the king tries hard to understand the queen, even taking her on a horseback ride to visit the royal villa.
How the queen is now “all in” with the king, even though it may not be a wide decision.
The king and queen’s hilarious and scandalous PDA (public display of affection) to counter rumors that they were faking their nights together.
Jo Hwa-jin’s decision to break with the Jo family and do what she can to support the king’s dreams, including asking the king to depose her as concubine.
The conflict between the king and Prince Yeongpyeong, who still doesn’t believe that the queen is on their side.
When the Grand Dowager Queen asked Kim Byeong-in to bring her the queen’s head, he took a no-win situation and turned it into a masterful stroke by threatening the king over the codes in the workbook, convincing the king to leave the palace and put down the Donghak Rebellion, restoring the Grand Dowager Queen’s regency, and saving the queen.
The king leaves the palace without saying goodbye to the queen, who is left confused and sad.
The king’s guards turn on him and then he battles against Kim Byeong-in.

I'd like to vote for "A Time Called You" for season 6! I just finished it and am still trying to wrap my head around the timeline. I need you to explain it to me please 😂
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteJust finished listening to E18.
I liked how Jo Hwa Jin story evolved. It was nice that they didn't make her the "other" evil woman standing between the leads. And the scene where the Queen calls her in E18 is one of my favourites. It was very touching. I agree with Joanna that this was JBH. He is an arrogant playboy, but he is actually a decent person. He is perfect apart from his many flaws lol.
As for the next drama:
I really liked and enjoyed "A Time Called You", but I am not sure it is a good choice. I am not convinced there is enough themes to discuss. I fear you will just end up spending lots of the time trying to put the timeline together. This might be fun for first time around, but I don't believe it is that interesting once you watched it all.
I wouldn't vote for "The Glory" either despite enjoying it a lot as well. It is about revenge. There is not a lot to talk about it.
Personally, I would like to hear you talking about shows that are thematically rich. Some examples (in addition to My Mister):
*Extraordinary Attorney Woo: Even if we leave Autism aside, its episodic nature offers great opportunity to discuss various issues.
*Because This is My First Life: Set in modern day Seoul explores 3 couples at different stages of their relationships and all that come with it.
*Our Blues: Omnibus series that tackles a variety of topics.
Wow, thank you for this thoughtful comment. We discussed your comment about A Time Called You and we think you have a great point. A Time Called You is confusing, but does it have enough to talk about in each episode? We are spoiled because there has been so much to talk about in our previous seasons and certainly this season, talking about Mr. Queen. Loved your nominations. We need to make a decision soon! Sooo hard!
