8.9 - Podcast Review of Episode 9 of Crash Landing On You (CLOY)

Today, we’ll be discussing Episode 9 of Crash Landing On You, the hit K Drama on Netflix starring Hyun Bin as Ri Jyeong Hyeok, Son Ye-jin as Yoon Se-ri, Seo Ji-hye as Seo Dan and Kim Jung-hyun as Gu Seung joon. The amazing Ernabel Demillo is back to help us recap and analyze this episode! We discuss:

  • The songs we feature during the recap: My Companion by Nam Hye Seung and Park Sang Hee and All Of My Days by Kim Sejeong.

  • Captain Ri didn’t believe Se-ri when she said she was going home. He was determined to find her!

  • When Captain Ri punched Cho Cheol Gang, it wasn’t very smart, but he was done and he was out of hope. He felt like once again, he had failed to protect someone he loved.

  • The language Se-ri uses when she speaks with Captain Ri’s father. She is very respectful and it’s hard to explain the levels of honorifics in Korean.

  • How Captain Ri’s parents are shocked to find out who Se-ri is, and that she and Captain Ri love each other.

  • How Captain Ri’s men spread the rumor about who Captain Ri’s father is, and this leads the Senior Colonel to release him from the detention center.

  • How Captain Ri works out that his father, General Ri, is probably the one who had Se-ri taken.

  • How Captain Ri and Se-ri discover that they encountered each other in Switzerland and Jeong Hyeok’s Song For My Brother gave Se-ri hope and he ultimately saved her life. This revelation scene was exquisitely filmed and edited.

  • How Cho Cheol Gang convinced the Military Director to have the Ri residence searched because he thinks Se-ri is hiding there. The search ultimately turns up nothing because Captain Ri and his men did an emergency switch at the DMZ.

  • Se-ri’s mom and sisters-in-law visit Se-ri’s apartment. Se-ri’s mom is full of worry and regret, while the sisters-in-law covet Se-ri’s things and her business, Se-ri’s Choice.

  • How our second leads, Gu Seung Jun and Seo Dan, encounter each other at the Pyongyang Hotel bar. They get really drunk and discover each other for the first time.

  • Captain Ri takes Se-ri to a point in the DMZ where she can easily cross over into South Korea. When Se-ri crosses over, Captain Ri decides to cross over and give Se-ri a big kiss!

  • In the epilogue, we see Se-ri organizing Captain Ri’s books so that the top lines say ‘I Love You, Ri Jeong Hyeok.”

  • The show we’re watching now, including Lovely Runner, Itaewon Class, and Red Sleeve.

  • Ernabel’s show, Asian American Life. In a recent segment, she shares that ube is the top flavor trends of 2024. She also interviewed Jeanie Chang, author of “How K-Dramas Can Transform Your Life: Powerful Lessons on Belongingness, Healing, and Mental Health.”

  1. Dear Joanna and Sung Hee, greetings from Stockholm, Sweden. CLOY was my "gateway drug" to KDrama (with a couple of recent strays to CDrama, just watched "Will Love in Spring" and "Meet Yourself"...) and I return to it once in a while, having rewatched several times, it´s like a warm blanket or a good friend when I feel a little down!! Still this series in KDrama Chat brings a lot of extra bonus info, details that I had not noticed (or bothered to do such deep research into - thank you!).
You mentioned streaming services in this episode, and I have noticed that the popularity of KDrama has made several streaming channels introduce more original or bought series. Two of my recent favourites, "Moving" and "A Shop for Killers" (the latter with my crush Lee Dong Wook) are on Disney+... I highly recommend both. At the moment I am watching "Like Flowers in Sand", about the Ssireum wrestling scene, and of course, a little romance...
Keep up the good work and I will keep listening!
    Kind regards from Nina Larrea

    1. Nina, thank you so much for your comment and hello from Northern VA! Sung Hee and I are thrilled that you enjoying CLOY and learning and realizing new things through our podcast! Yay!

And yes, it's amazing how many K Dramas are now available on the other streaming services. I LOVE Lee Dong Wook so thanks for recommendating A Shop for Killers

      Thank you for listening!

    2. Hello NIna, thank you for your comment. One thing that has been so meaningful to me about doing this podcast is the connection we make with people all over the world about something we all love and enjoy. The chance that we would ever have met in real life is vanishingly small, and yet here we are communicating from across the world.

I also watched Flowers in the Sand and really loved the leads, especially Jang Dong-Yoon, who played Kim Baek-Du. He was adorable. Did you know that Baek-Du and his brother Geum Gang are named after mountains?

Thanks so much for your support!

  2. I would want to punch Cho Cheol Gang too. That poor tomato plant! Attempted herbicide for sure. In reality, that plant would have been dead on day two if it had been gifted to me.

I am slowly noticing difference in speech. It's really helpful when I watch on my computer, since I have a language extension on my laptop. You can hover over words for their meaning.

General Ri obviously knows happy wife=happy life.

The heart fluttering line is probably an example of localization. It's colloquialism that Americans would understand more.

Chinese money is renminbi. I think it's shortened as RMB. I used to give English lessons on it and knew the different coins and bills.

Are timepieces significant on their own?

i wanted to see if the books really read that, so translated it. They do!

I totally speed run shows. I am currently watching Move to Heaven and Mr. Queen, Strangers from Hell, My Sweet Mobster, and a bunch of other things. I currently subscribe to around 7 streaming services.

My daughter likes an ube latte at a local bakery.

I started Wonderful World a few months ago. Cha Eun Woo is also one of those multitalented individuals. He was actually my gateway drug into kpop.

This is actually one of my favorite episodes. Unfortunately, it makes me keep watching and I'm now on 11. I was also the kid who got in trouble in school for reading ahead. No discipline at all.

    1. Laurel, thanks for your great comments! My cousin Linda told me to get the language extension on my laptop and to watch Netflix in Chrome so that I can see the Korean.

Did you see my use post on Instagram? The ube mochi from Trader Joe's was really good!

I'm rewatching episode 11 of CLOY! It's soooo good!

      Thanks for listening and commenting!
