Sung Hee is back from her trip to London! Today, we’ll be discussing Episode 12 of Crash Landing On You, the hit K Drama on Netflix starring Hyun Bin as Ri Jyeong Hyeok, Son Ye-jin as Yoon Se-ri, Seo Ji-hye as Seo Dan and Kim Jung-hyun as Gu Seung joon. We discuss:
The songs we feature during the recap: Seo Dan and Same Sky, Different World by Nam Hye Seung and Park Sang Hee
A few shout outs to our listeners who have commented on the blog and given us reviews.
The emotional scene when Captain Ri finds Se-ri in the parking garage. Once again, he’s found her!
Captain Ri and Se-ri clearly love each other but they know they can’t be together. Captain Ri doesn’t try to stay and Se-ri doesn’t ask him to stay.
Geum Eun Dong’s and Captain Ri’s hilarious screen names in the online game they played!
Captain Ri was a shell of himself, not believing he could or should ever be happy, until he met Se-ri. Captain Ri did the same for Se-ri.
How Captain Ri’s men must be absolutely overwhelmed by the wealth of South Korea.
How Yoon Se-hyeong will stop at nothing to become Chairman. It’s an act that he cares about what happens to Se-ri if Cho Cheol Gang takes her!
Why Se-ri’s father wrote his relationship to Se-ri in Chinese or Hanja, when he went to get her from the military.
We get the heartbreaking, soul crushing flashback from Se-ri’s youth when her stepmom left her on the beach. This is why Se-ri has always felt alone and unwanted, and why her stepmom is haunted by her relationship with Se-ri.
Why is the former Chairman, Se-ri’s dad not getting blamed for his extramarital affair with Se-ri’s mom, for conning Gu Seung Jun’s father, and for his financial wrongdoings at Queens Group?
The start of a romance between Seo Dan and Gu Seung Jun. She must be fascinated and intrigued by Gu Seung Jun!
The amazing friendships between the village women.
When Captain Ri found Se-ri’s voice recorder and listened to her confession and his own voice, he realized that they had met in Switzerland. It seems that he and Se-ri are fated to meet and keep finding each other.
Did you know that only a very small fraction of Chinese citizens know all the Hanja? There are thousands of them. I can imagine that learning all of them would take a lifetime. Some of them are really complex. I've been writing a few in an insane hobby language project I decided to start.
ReplyDeleteWow, learning Hanja! That is impressive! I really don't know how they learn all those characters and how you keep them straight. I would think that if we have problems with typos and misspellings in English, it must be much worse for them in Chinese.
DeleteLearning, not so much. More like copying it, and then writing the Pinyin underneath. I'll probably have to write better pronunciation as I have lost my PInyin skills.
DeleteMy little project includes five syllabary languages so far, so I'll have a lot of characters to write. The hardest to write so far is definitely Chinese since they use all Hanja. Pronunciation brings a whole different set of problems.
Laurel, you're learning Hanja? Amazing! Please photos of what you're writing and learning on Instagram!
DeleteI had a really hard getting through the scene with the voice recorder. I had a friend follow through with that almost a decade ago. She had already been on my mind in recent weeks; but this time, I was left wishing that she had met a Captain Ri to give her hope.
ReplyDeleteI actually request that you cover Twinkling Watermelon in a future show because I really identified with a lot of it. I have lots of comments on that one.
Laurel, I started watching Twinkling Watermelon per your recommendation! I love it. Its got a real Back to the Future Vibe to it. I'm half expecting the ML to start to fade away while playing the guitar! Question for you: is the music that plays when the music shop appears the same as from Hotel de Luna?! If its not the same, its very similar. I think Joanna would love this show. I think Sung Hee would be very confused by all the time travel! LOL!
DeleteI watched Twinkling Watermelon and I loved it!
DeleteI agree, it reminds me of Back to the Future, but in my opinion, so much better. For me, it’s definitely on the list for future seasons of KDramaChat.
Laurel, I lost a dear, dear friend to suicide in high school. I still think about her and her family. I'm so sorry.
DeleteAs for Twinkling Watermelon, I'm getting daily texts from Sung Hee and Ernabel telling me to please start that show. I have been mostly off K Dramas the past few weeks because of the Olympics and a giant conference that I just came back from. I didn't even realize all these great comments were coming in about this episode until tonight! Thank you for this terrific recommendation!
Joanna, obviously you have to watch TW (has it reached the level where we can just refer to it by the initials?!). I'm not sure if it is better or worse than Back to the Future because ones under two hours and TW is 16 hours! While watching it actually made me appreciate how good back to the future is - especially considering its under two hours. I won't get into specifics because I don't want to spoil anything, but i was kind of surprised how well the ML adjusted to being in 1995 compared to Marty McFly who was a complete fish out of water in 1955. Made me wonder if the difference between 1985 American and 1955 America was greater than the difference between 2023 Korea and 1985 Korea. I think there's a bigger difference between 1985 and 1955 USA, but maybe that's because I wasn't alive in 1955 and I was (very much) alive in 1995 (although not in Korea - I'm not even alive in 2024 Korea much to my daily disappointment ;-))
DeleteGet on it Joanna! You will love it. The FL is the SFL from Business Proposal (my sister pointed out the second leads in that show were more attractive than the leads!) She was also in Mr. Queen. I'd watch her in anything.
OK. Gotta go watch episode 13 to be ready for tomorrow's podcast!
So thanks (I think?) for the apology over all the swooning over Park Kwang-beom! As I was listening I was already drafting my post calling for no more swooning! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I gotta say the Ducklings weren't the only ones in awe of Se-ri's apartment! Five bedrooms!
Every episode I watch I am reminded how funny this show is. Sure it is ridiculous with the missed connections and all. But Se-ri putting the child controls on the computer and Jeong-hyeok sulking was hilarious!
Malcolm, we think about you all the time when we swoon and wonder, "what would Malcolm say?"
DeleteYes, Se-ri's apartment was amazing. I wonder how many bathrooms she has.
And yes, this show is really funny. I think that's part of the charm of K Dramas. There are always light hearted, even goofy, moments in the most serious of dramas. Even Mr. Sunshine had funny moments! Whether it's Captain Ri pouting, the ducklings being goofy, or the village ladies being hilarious, the light moments add levity and depth to the show!
I "made" my sister watch The Glory with me. No real goofy moments in that K Drama. Maybe some moments of dark humor. Then again, its not your typical K Drama!
DeleteShowing Seri grieving, when she thinks that Captain Ri and the ducklings have left her, connects powerfully with the earlier scene where Seri's mother abandons her at the beach.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing that I forgot to mention in my previous post: thanks again for the high-quality discussion and analysis! I love KdramaChat!
DeleteWow, that is such great insight! We will have to share during our next recording! Thank you or this insight and thank you for listening!
