  1. Hi, I’m Ellen Sullivan from Laguna Niguel, back after a hiatus due to zombie aversion, and happy to be here! Thanks so much for tipping me to Mr. Queen, now in my top 3 with CLOY and Mr. Sunshine. And of course I’m a big Shin Hy Sun fan now. I know it’s early, but I’d like to nominate When The Phone Rings for your next series to cover. Fabulous plot twists from the beginning with plenty more surprises after that, plus great acting and couples chemistry. It’s a big hit for a reason! And so far I love this show too, I’m listening to you guys as I watch each episode. Love you guys!

    1. Hi Ellen, so glad to have you back! And that you love Mr Queen and Shin Hye Sun as much as we do. She is a fabulous actress, so talented, and Mr Queen will always have a special place in my heart. I have literally pushed this show on so many people. It is one of my all time favorites.

I agree that When the Phone Rings was a wild ride. So many plot twists for sure! The chemistry between the leads was amazing. I think when it comes time to think about our next show we will have an embarrassment of riches. Thanks so much for your input!

    2. I still can't do the zombies....though if I ever take the leap it will definately be watching Kingdom here. I've tried watching Mr. Queen twice and just can't get beyond the second episode. I've only heard praise for it from anyone who speaks or writes about it, but I just am not getting it. Over time my regard for Shin Hye-sun continues to grow, so maybe after we finish this I will try Mr. Queen again.

I sure do agree about WTPRs. One of my favorites in a year with top-drawer dramas like QoT and Lovely Runner. I do love a good mystery that unfolds with some twists and turns. Plus I think we all agree the chemistry with the lead couple was ablaze. I loved Yoo Yeon-seok in Hospital Playlist and even more seeing him playing such a different character in WTPR. Also, Chae Soo-bin played a character that was so apart from the perky, chirpy characters she has played in the past. Also, great credit to her for learning sign language.

    3. * I am huge fan of Mr. Queen. Probably my second favourite Kdrama (My Mister is the runaway first). While I admit it is not the most sophisticated, or deep series, it is one that brings me an enormous joy and amusement. I stopped counting how many times I have watched the first 5-6 episodes. Shin Hye-Sun gives the best performance I have seen in any language in a similar type of roles.
To 2nd Anonymous(Cindy?): If you have watched 2 episodes and still you are not into it, then maybe it is not for you. The series become a little bit more serious, but odds are you are not going to love it if you are struggling with it early on.

*WTPR: First 4-5 episodes gripping. Chemistry is great, but I didn't like the rest of it. It has indeed a lot of twists and reveals, but almost all of them made it worse and worse for me. And, don't even get me started on that last episode :). I guess we just have different taste :)

    4. Oh my goodness, I'm late to the party! Guys, I celebrated my 25th anniversary with my husband last night! Woo hoo!

Ellen, welcome back! Don't know who Anonymous is, maybe Cindy? I understand not loving zombie shows. I'm not a huge fan but I thought Kingdom was a masterpiece.

Mr. Queen is a masterpiece. What's interesting is that it was a fun comedy to me until we discussed it in season 5. Then Sung Hee and I realized how complex the show is, with lots of plot lines and a lot of cultural elements! It took me a year to get past the first two episodes but Sung Hee kept telling me to push through and I'm so glad I did!

As for WRPR, I agree the first half was amazing. Such storytelling and such drama! And then it gets crazier and crazier. Still liked it a lot though and I think it's worth a watch!

  2. Ok. Looks like things are really getting interesting with all the revelations in this episode. As to who ordered the hit on Seo ha. All you need to ask is cui bono.

One thing that is not getting interesting is Seo ha. This guy is still a wet blanket. Literally in this episode. But I will give him credit for that face first flop into the pool!

He kisses Ban Ji eum and then she kisses him back, and he says he still needs more time?!?!?!?! This guy is so lucky that Ji eum was reincarnated and came back for him otherwise he would certainly die a sad lonely virgin who has never been kissed! And I’m sorry Joann, you feel bad for the actors having to do the kissing scenes?! “Oh no, I have to kiss Shin Hye-sun for work today!” Let me just say that my best day of work was never that good! Also, Ha Do Yoon isn’t much better. Yoon Joo won is literally throwing herself at him but he’s like “I’m not good enough for this florist!” Come on my guy! In my fan fiction Ji-eum and Joo won ditch these two sad sacks and go on a girls trip (to Portland, Oregon) – but that’s just me….

Dr. Lee, I was hoping you would explain the purpose of the french fry lamp they used on Joo-won’s ankle!. And Joanna, thanks for the spoiler for Scarlet Heart Ryeo! I hear it is coming to Viki. I guess I’ll prepare myself to be sad…..

Han-na is an interesting character. You would think a mother would want to see her only son! But I guess she’s busy doing hip hop dance performances. And you are right about the actress. She graduated from Dankook University in 2008 with a degree in Life Musicology. Whatever that is.

Thanks for the insight on the translation. I did not pick up that Seo ha did not use Ji eum’s name. I find that Netflix often includes the character’s name in the translation even when it is not said in Korean. This often happens when characters address each other by title or relationship. I like that Viki does not do this. It assumes you know what Unnie or Hyung or Sunbae means and just use that word instead of the characters name.

    1. Malcolm, I so enjoy all your comments! I have to agree about Seo Ha still being a bit of a wet blanket --though for females I think we can fill in some blanks about his appeal.... :) Ha, I would love to have the plot sending Ji-eum and Cho-won go on a roadtrip in response to the dumb resistance of their guys. I guess the best we got was the shopping trip. How about a nice weekend getawy to Jeju and the guys have some realizations missing them?

I'm thinking Ha-na is not staying close to Seo-ha because of the 'bad things happen when you get involved with people from your previous life' that she and Min-gi referred to but we haven't heard more about. I first suspected she was Seo-ha's mother when she was in the hallway at hotel, and how she reacted to the picture of Ms. Jang, Seo-ha and the uncle as he passed by.

Ugh, I wish we could have some input on translations. It irritates when they use a name in place of a title/relationship like seonsaengnim, hyung. noona, sunbae, hoobae, etc. Using the actual word vs name would provide more accuracy about the way the characters regard the relationship. Now that hyung is added to the OED maybe Netflix will make a change.

    2. Oops, sorry. I just noticed this and my previous comment defaulted to Anonymous. I would at least like to compliment you using my name, because that is how much I enjoy your comments!

    3. Thanks Cindy! I really appreciate it. Love your comments as well. You are probably right about Ha-na not contacted Seo-ha because it could have negative consequences. Or maybe its because she realizes he's a wet blanket and she doesn't need that energy in her new life! But its probably the former..... lol

    4. *"He kisses Ban Ji eum and then she kisses him back, and he says he still needs more time?!?!?!?!" lol.
*"Ha Do Yoon isn’t much better. Yoon Joo won is literally throwing herself at him but he’s like “I’m not good enough for this florist!”.
I don't fully agree with you on that one. I certainly can see his pov. It is not so much as he is not good enough, but in real life, he would end up like the male lead from Queen of Tears in those first few episodes. Just a glorified errand boy.
I don't know how rich is she though? If she is not super rich, then it might not be so bad

    5. I don't LOVE the Moon Seo ha character, but I like him and he's certainly cute enough for me! Haha! In the next episode, which Sung Hee and I recorded on Monday, you'll hear me tell Yoon Cho won to just move on from Ha Do yoon, haha!

Yoon Cho won is rich, which is why she can hang out with Seo ha and Lee Ji seok and not get in trouble when she kicks Lee Ji seok in the shins. She's the daughter of some Chairman herself.

I agree with you all that Hanna is staying away from Seo ha because she knows bad things will happen.

      Love all of your comments!

  3. 19th Life is giving me one of the things I enjoy most about Kdramas: I don't know where this is going. There are questions/mysteries raised and I can't see how they will end (beyond Happily Ever After). I feel like with US dramas I can see who the culprit is, the motive and the ending like a white truck of doom coming down the street. Kdramas have mysteries and plenty of good red herrings along the way to keep us guessing. Kdramas also give us unique plots, e.g. what happens if you remember your previous 18 lives, is this good or bad to remember, or what happens if you seek out people from previous lives.

I was thinking we would get more insight into the consequences of what happens when you interact with people from your previous life in this episode. We have some clues in the conversations of Ha-na and Min-gi that it leads to bad things like Ae-kyung's illness and the dying azaleas Also, it just occurred to me to wonder how Min-gi and Ha-na found each other? Is Min-gi also someone with a connection to our lead characters? Maybe Ha Do-yoon's father? Ji-eum made a comment early on wondering if she had been reincarnated so quickly after dying because she had been murdered. The car driver was murdered as well. Also, was Ha-na murdered when she was Seo-ha's mother and reincarnated immediately because of that? We don't know much about the illness that killed her. But as we have seen (Marry My Husband, WTPH spring to mind) sometimes those who are already dying are finished off by pushes into glass tables or smothered with pillows to hasten their demise. It seems as if Ji-eum, Ha-na and Min-gi are all about the same age.......so maybe they were all reincarnated at about the same time?

We don't know yet who ordered Seo-ha killed or why Ms. Jang and the uncle seem so close. Killing Seo-ha and his mother would certainly affect the inheritance of what is clearly a large family fortune. So many questions--and I mean that in a good way.

    1. Cindy, 1,000% agree with you! This show has a lot of interesting twists and turns. K Dramas are great at that. There are a lot of red herrings that throw us off, which is really fun!

Kang Min gi and Hanna are really interesting. How did they meet? Why do they remember their past lives like Ban Ji rum, but not Moon Seo ha?

There are lot of plot holes for sure, but what fun to try and decipher all the relationships!

    1. Yes, I saw on Instagram! I own the DVD set because I love the show so much and couldn't find it anywhere! Isn't that hilarious? Who owns a DVD player anymore? Clearly, me! It's been a while since I watched Scarlet Heart. I wonder how it will stand up to the test of time. But you now me, I ADORE Lee Joon gi and IU! So yay for Viki getting the streaming rights! Will you watch it again? And sorry for spoiling it for Malcolm, but I thought everyone knew about the SAD ending of Scarlet Heart RYEO!
