  1. *If you had done “My Mister” I would have found you much earlier, because that is how I got into listening to K-drama podcasts. After watching the series twice, watching everything of significance on Youtube, I was looking for more. Most podcasts I found were meh. But, there were maybe 2 or 3 decent ones. So, I listened to their other shows.
Eventually, I decided to look for “Mr Queen”, because there is very little on it, and that is how I found you. I eventually listened to It is Ok not to be Ok, and 25,21 as well.
And, I can honestly say that I haven’t listened to anyone else afterwards. Your podcast just has the perfect blend and balance between the various elements, and incorporate all sorts of other stuff and subjects. Sometimes (like in the case of this show) I found those side discussions more interesting than the show itself.
..and now I am loving this new geography quiz addition.

*I used to be addicted (not any more) to American medical dramas. House was my favourite series for 18 years. Not even Breaking Bad removed of that spot (artistically BB is better, but House is much more fun), but then came along two depressed people from South Korea, who liked to just walk and talk at night after work and knocked out of its first place lol.

I totally understand SungHee comments about medical dramas. I remember one of Houses episodes had a disease that my mother had, and oh!boy! There was NO WAY 3 supposedly top doctors, including a genius, would struggle so much to come up with answers.
And, that is why, I am completely puzzled how she liked “Doctor Slump”. I mean, that series made it out to overcome PTSD and Burn out is to drink gallons and gallons of Soju, and play in the arcade. And, yeah take some pills, but don’t forget to wash them out with more Soju.
..and don’t even get me started on that mouse in the hospital!

    * By the way, I forgot to mention that the scene on the bridge from last episode is SO GOOD!. This is something that Kdrama excels at. The Cinematography is really Cinematic.

*Malcolm, maybe we don’t ask what are you watching, but we listen. I have decided to watch “Love Scout”. After E01, I am into it. Han Ji Min looks SO different from “Our Blues” though.

    1. Hello, Seven Seas. I appreciate hearing your story as to how you ended up finding us. And so gratifying that you are enjoying the podcast! I agree with you about My Mister. It is definitely in my top 5, if not just #1 overall. It's even more poignant looking back at it, knowing that Lee Sun Kyun is no longer with us.

I have to agree that the medicine in Dr Slump was quite fast and loose. I think I tolerated that aspect of the show mainly because the medicine was more of a side detail with more focus on the relationship between the two leads. Mental health is a delicate topic and difficult to portray accurately, but I do appreciate that it's getting attention in these dramas. I recommend A Daily Dose of Sunshine for another depiction of mental health. I think that Hospital Playlist did the best job in being accurate about medicine. I hate to say it, mice in the hospital is not unheard of...

I'll have to check out Love Scout, after getting a now double recommendation from both you and Malcolm.

Thanks so much as always for your insightful comments and being such a loyal listener!

    2. Thanks Seven Seas! It's nice to know someone appreciates my recommendations (unlike certain podcast hosts...) LOL I first fell in love with Han Ji Min in "Our Blues." An amazing K Drama and one I've advocated for this Podcast reviewing for an upcoming season. Yes she does look different, but I imagine there are not may haenyeos that look like CEOs and vice versa!

    3. Seven Seas, how great that you found us through Mr. Queen. Mr. Queen is Sung Hee's favorite K Drama. She pushes it on everyone she knows! I was on a girls' trip with her and she made all of us watch the first two episodes!

BTW, if you all think medical dramas play fast and loose with the medicine, Korean and US shows (everyone, really!) play fast and loose with tech. When I see on these shows that the authorities were able to locate the person by tracing their call, or they hacked into x system, or they managed to track the bad guys even though they used multiple anonymizing relays, I just have to laugh coz that stuff takes days and weeks to do!

And yes, Malcolm, thank you for sharing your list. Love Scout is on the list!

  2. Hello Joanna and Sung Hee, I found your podcast when I searched Spotify for discussions on Queen of Tears. I was on a high when the series finished that I wanted to consume more, and your podcast channel was the perfect one to listen.

I have seen the entire See You In My 19th Life, and I have to hand it to you two to deep dive per episode without spoilers. I couldn't do this I would be brimming with details on how the entire series went.

I second Seven Seas on Love Scout, it's a true romcom. Finally.

    1. Thanks, Irma for your feedback! I agree, that my head was also swimming after watching Queen of Tears and it was hard to let it go. So glad that you found us!

As for not giving away spoilers on 19th Life, I make sure I only watch the episode we're reviewing so I don't accidentally give anything away, which is helped by the fact that I really don't remember what happens next. I remember in general what the final conclusion was, but it's such a long journey between here and there and I have no recollection at all as to how we get there. I am really enjoying discovering the series again, as if for the first time, but with the benefit of knowing that it's worth watching.

I think Love Scout will be next on my list after such strong endorsements from all of you.

    2. Irma, you are one of many listeners who found us because of Queen of Tears. That shows was such a blockbuster! So glad you stayed!

As for not giving away spoilers, we try really, really hard not to spoil future episodes. Malcolm makes fun of me for speculating when I *know* the outcome, haha.

I guess Love Scout is gonna be at the top of my list after Mr. Plankton!

  3. I found this wonderful podcast by accident too. I had seen My Mister because my friend had told me about Mr Sunshine, and after I thanked him for it, turned out I’d watched the wrong show. So I went looking for Mr. Sunshine and found Kdrama Chat. After I watched it and listened to you guys, I got him to watch My Mister too. The two shows are fantastic in their own ways, and I remain sad that Lee Sun Kyung took his own life. I saw a video of people entering his funeral and there was IU walking in with her sweet, sorrowful face in tears.

Speaking of IU, I’m really looking forward to her new one, “When Life Gives You Tangerines” on Netflix next month.

One element I love about Kdramas is the way they lead you to pass judgement on a character as a good or a bad person, then more is revealed, and it turns out you shouldn’t have jumped to a conclusion until you knew more! A great life lesson for us all, and I appreciate the reminder.

    1. I am also eagerly waiting for "When Life Gives You tangerines". I must admit not so much for IU, but for the director of "Miseang" & "My Mister".
This might be unpopular opinion, but I think IU is just a decent actress. Not great one.
However, in "My Mister" she was great! her eyes deserved an award. So, I think this director can get the maximum out of her.
Directors are a bit like sports managers. Sometimes they can do great things and with trophies with just slightly above average players.

    2. Seven Seas, same for me with WLGYT, because it’s the combination of IU and the director from My Mister! Regardless of her other work, or his, that show was deeply felt by everyone I know who saw it. My top 5, as of now, are CLOY, Mr Sunshine, My Mister, Mr. Queen, and King Eternal Monarch. Numbers 5-10, are Queen Of Tears, Crash Course In Romance, When The Phone Rings, and spots 9 and 10 are fluid. I’m currently watching Prison Playbook, which is really good! I have started but not finished Business Proposal, and Lovely Runner and have more on the list.

    3. Ellen and Seven Seas, I love IU! My first K Drama was Hotel Del Luna. I thought Yeo Jin goo was good, but I LOVED IU! So my second K Drama was Scarlet Heart RYEO! I saw My Mister much later and thought she was fantastic in that show. She was sweet in Dream with Park Seo joon. And I'm a big fan of her music!

I'm also looking forward to When Life Gives You Tangerines. The filming looks to be a unique style and the match up with Park Bo gum is really interesting! Can't wait!

  4. Wow. What an episode. Where to begin. I guess the obvious thing is Si-an decision. I mean, I think we all knew she was going to pick Jun-seo in the end, but the producers really did their best to try and make it seem like it was really up in the air. And can we talk about my girl Ji-Yeon?! How did the most beautiful girl on the island get stuck with that dud Te-Hwan. Dude is so clueless – kinda reminds me of that Seo-ha character from See You in My 19th Life! I just hope she meets up with Dex and gets her happy ending! Oh, wait. I’m sorry. These are my comments for another show…. My bad.

As for this week’s episode of SUIM19L, I still can’t with Seo-ha! Guy booked a two bedroom for the overnight trip?! I’m surprised he didn’t spend most of the night in the bottom of that yellow lit pool.

I debated whether Seo-ha knew Hana was his mom. After learning about Ji-eum and her past lives you would think a person could put two and two together and figure it out. But he’s so clueless maybe he still hasn’t figured it out….

Honestly, at the end of the episode I was just hoping Ji-eum would just kill Seo-ha. Now that would have been a plot twist!

    Few more thoughts:

I never really got the mistress vibe with CEO Jang and the Chairman. Maybe he was ready for a new mistress, and this was an easy way to get rid of her!

I have seen “Please take care of me” translated as “I’m in your care” or “I’ll be in your care” during formal introductions. That sounds like a more formal British English phrase, although I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone actually say that.

Gotta disagree on the Swarovski jewelry Joanna. Was not a fan. That looked like something you could buy at Claire’s. Which seems on point for Seo-ha….

Joanna is tired of time travel K Drama’s?! Dr. Lee, check her vitals!

As for Trauma Code, I agree it is ridiculous. I knew Sung Hee would hate it the minute they showed the anesthesiologist refusing to do the ER surgery! And it’s not just the medical stuff that is ridiculous, the entire plot is bananas. At one point they travel from South Korea to South Sudan to do “emergency surgery!” But I did watch all eight episodes.

Special Episode coming!?! I hope that means the return of Ernnabelle!!

And finally, I regret to inform you that I will NOT be able to make the Tokyo meet and greet…..

    1. I think I may have another K Drama Element for you. From what I have gleaned, Koreans almost always shower before they, as Joanna would say, have a steamy night together. This is often played up for comic effect or tension in K Dramas when one characters says something like "Should I shower first?" implying said steamy night is about to go down. Its similar to a character saying "Would you like to come up for some Ramen?" Usually , one of the characters misunderstands or gets very nervous when showering is brought up. This was the case with our 30 something year old virgin Seo-ha in episode 10. So I think showering as an indication of a steamy night to follow is a K Drama element.

    2. Malcolm, you seem annoyed this week, but entertainingly annoyed, as usual!

    3. I'm annoyed I can't make the Tokyo meet up! ;-)

    4. Malcolm, thank you, as always, for your comments! Where do I start?

Seo ha really grew on me as the episodes progressed. I thought he was colorless and a wimp but as he blossomed, he grew on me. Plus, I like him better this watch, don't know why. But I agree with you. A two bedroom? Come on, buddy!

I think you're right that there wasn't mistress vibes coming from CEO Jang. I was misled by the Ju won't memory of them talking very intimately at the to of the stairs, but that was girl's memory that was probably tarnished.

I'm not really tired of time travel. I just wanted a break. Which is why I watched Trauma Code, which I loved. I agree the medicine is crazy but the tech hacking in these shows is also unbelievable, unless Korea is somehow populated by a bunch of super cybercriminals and white hat hackers! I loved Healer but that tech is crazy! Or maybe cybersecurity in Korea is really bad and just anyone can hack any old CCTV!

If you can't make the Tokyo meet and greet, maybe I can meet you at KCon in August!

Finally, showering before intimacy, interesting! It's also in Hometown Cha Cha Cha, and other shows. I'm gonna have to look for it!
